Our mailbox has been filling up with a
number of notices about trips that are far from pedestrian. One such
letter was titled “Roll the Wagon” and invited guests
to become pioneers and relive the spirit of the Old West, traveling
by wagon and on horseback and camping out in pitched tents in National
Parks among deer, moose and elk. Another “South Africa Soft
Adventure” promised abseiling down Table Mountain, shark diving
in Cape Town; hiking, rafting, surfing and a non-traditional safari
in Tsitskama on the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast; and horseback
riding, paragliding and swimming with the penguins in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
At the beginning of the last century, daring men shot animals for
sport and the Explorers Club, now celebrating its Centennial Year
(2004) was founded. For some, vacationing was always about physical
challenge. The hot trend at the end of the last and the beginning
of this century parallels the adventurousness of men and women who
lived 100 years ago. Vacationers, particularly younger ones, have
been spending their time off mountain climbing, scuba diving, kayaking,
practicing martial arts, sailing, shooting, skiing, snowboarding,
racing and improving their tennis or golf game. So pack your gear
and head for the great outdoors.
