It's not Gstaad or even Vail, but for executives who find themselves in the
New York area during the winter months there's nothing as accessible for a quick
schuss down the slopes as the state's Catskill Mountains, particularly
Ski Windham. Located two and one-half hours from Manhattan, its best
feature is that you don't have to leave business totally behind. For a nominal
fee you can use the Commerce Club, a pleasant room in the base lodge. The Club
offers limited secretarial service and is equipped with fax, private work stations
that include word processors, phones, calculators, easels and copying machines.
Pagers are also provided for skiers who are expecting a phone call or a fax.
Up-to-date snowmaking equipment guarantees that there will always be powder during
the season, about mid-November through mid-April. The area's top accommodations are
at
the Windham Ridge Club or the Windham Mountain Village within walking
distance of the slopes. These townhouses come fully equipped, making them more desirable
than hotel or motel rooms. You'll need the kitchen. The food at La Gringlia,
the only restaurant around said to be four-star, was just plain awful. The food at
Ski Windham's birthday bash, which is held every year on the third Saturday night
in January, was even worse.
